You Fell Out Of A Boat - Now What?

Falling out of a boat while fishing can be a jarring experience, but staying calm is key. The first thing to remember: don’t panic. If you're wearing a life jacket, you're already ahead of the game. If not, this is your first reminder to always wear one, no matter how confident you are on the water.

Getting Back In

If you fall out of a larger boat, try to swim toward the stern (rear) where there's usually an easier entry point. Use the ladder or any sturdy part of the boat to pull yourself up. For kayak fisherman, flip the kayak back over if it's upside down. Position yourself at the center, kick with your legs, and pull your body up. Once your chest is over the edge, swing your legs into the boat. Check out this handy video for a visual:

Safety Equipment

Wearing a life jacket is non-negotiable. Keep a throw rope or lifebuoy on board, especially if you're fishing in larger water bodies. A whistle and emergency radio can also make the difference if you're struggling to signal for help.

The HELP Position

If you can’t get back into the boat or kayak, assume the HELP (Heat Escape Lessening Posture). This position slows down heat loss while conserving energy. Cross your arms tightly against your chest and bring your knees up, keeping your body compact. If you're wearing a life jacket, this will be much easier. Floating this way reduces the risk of hypothermia in cold water.

Summary

Falling out of a boat while fishing doesn’t have to end in disaster. Always wear a life jacket, practice getting back into your boat, and know the HELP position. With a little preparation, you can turn a potential emergency into a minor hiccup in your fishing trip.
